What is the Viewmodel in CS2?
In CS2, the word viewmodel refers to your character’s weapon and hands, as seen in the first-person view. While you don’t have complete freedom over where it’s placed on the screen, viewmodel console commands can shift its position to some extent.
Using the console commands listed below, you can change your CS2 viewmodel position in any match, including competitive play.
CS2 Viewmodel Commands
First thing’s first: if you haven’t used the developer console yet, start by making sure that it’s enabled. Go to Settings → Game and set “Enable Developer Console” to “Yes”. Once in the game, use the tilde [~] key to open the console.
Now, here are the most useful CS2 viewmodel commands:
- viewmodel_fov # – changes your FOV (field of view), adjusting how much of your surroundings you will see around the viewmodel. Replace # with a value between 54 (small FOV) and 68 (large FOV). You can find out more about it here: How to Change FOV in CS2
- viewmodel_offset_x # – changes the position of your viewmodel horizontally (left and right). Replace # with a value between -2.5 (left) and 2.5 (right)
- viewmodel_offset_y # – changes how far the viewmodel appears. Replace # with a value between -2 (closer) and 2 (farther)
- viewmodel_offset_z # – changes the position of your viewmodel vertically (up and down). Replace # with a value between -2 (lower) and 2 (higher)
With these commands, you can set each parameter of your viewmodel position manually. This gives you maximum control over the adjustments. However, there’s also a fifth command, which enables one of the viewmodel presets:
- viewmodel_presetpos # – changes the position of your viewmodel according to one of three presets available in the game. Replace # with 1, 2, or 3
The numbers correspond to these presets:
- Desktop – the game’s default settings
- Couch – small field of view, with the viewmodel close to the player and centered. This setting is supposedly for players who use a TV screen instead of a monitor and sit farther away from the screen (presumably on a couch)
- Classic – the default setting from Counter-Strike 1.6—it’s similar to the Desktop preset, except the viewmodel is closer to the bottom-right corner of the screen
You can also access the presets via the game options (Settings → Game → Viewmodel Settings).
Best CS2 Viewmodel Settings Used by Pros
Is there such a thing as the best viewmodel settings in CS2? Well, possibly: according to the information listed on players’ profiles on ProSettings.net, the vast majority of pros use the same viewmodel settings. There’s no way that’s a coincidence, so there could be some advantage to using these! Here they are:
viewmodel_fov 68
viewmodel_offset_x 2.5
viewmodel_offset_y 0
viewmodel_offset_z -1.5
As you can see, pros set their FOV to the maximum value, which provides the best peripheral vision. It’s easy to see why this could improve performance—a large FOV improves your spacial awareness, meaning that it’s harder to sneak up on you.
The other three commands position the viewmodel as far as possible to the left, at a medium distance from the player, shifted slightly closer to the bottom of the screen.
That said, the best viewmodel position is a matter of preference—you could find that you perform better with different settings, or just prefer the look of a different setup. So, it’s worth experimenting with these values to see what you like best! To make this easier, consider using a special map: for instance, crashz’ Viewmodel Generator, which lets you easily switch between different x, y, z, and FOV values.
And that’s all there is to it! With these CS2 viewmodel commands, you’ll be able to fine-tune your game’s appearance to your needs, hopefully helping you optimize your performance.
