What is the HUD in CS2?
The HUD (Heads-Up Display) is the interface that provides you with key information during gameplay. The HUD in CS2 includes your health and ammo, mini-map, team info, money, weapons, and kill feed. The crosshair is usually considered to be part of the HUD as well.
Why Hide the HUD in CS2?
Hiding the HUD is useful for taking better screenshots and recording videos. If you want to take a screenshot of a good smoke lineup to share with your audience, for example, doing so with the HUD disabled will give you a cleaner, tidier image. Similarly, disabling the HUD is common practice for showing off your weapon skins in videos and screenshots. Hiding the HUD is also a good idea when surfing in CS2, since you don’t need to know about your ammo, health, and other such info for surfing.
In some games, it makes sense to hide the HUD for immersion—playing without immediate access to the mini-map or health and ammo information can make for a more realistic experience.
However, in Counter-Strike (and most other FPS games), this isn’t really advisable. As a game of not only shooting, but also fast-paced strategy, it pretty much requires constant access to your stats and information about your team and surroundings. Still, some players turn off the HUD and crosshair in CS2 temporarily as a fun challenge. Note that disabling the HUD in official tournaments is usually not allowed.
Some players also find the HUD distracting; and if that’s the case for you, consider changing your HUD settings instead of turning it off completely. Go to Settings → Game → HUD to adjust the size and color of your HUD.
How to Hide the HUD in CS2
To hide the HUD in CS2, you’ll need to use a console command. So, the first step is to make sure your console is enabled:
- Go to the Game tab in Settings
- Find “Enable Developer Console” near the top of the list
- Set to “Yes”
Next, use one of the following commands, depending on how much you want to disable.
Disable HUD, Keep Crosshair
To disable everything except the crosshair, open the console during the game using the tilde key [~] and use this command:
cl_draw_only_deathnotices 1
Once you hit Enter, everything except the crosshair should disappear. You’ll still see the kill feed as well.
To turn the full HUD back on, use this command:
cl_draw_only_deathnotices 0
Disable HUD and Crosshair
To disable everything in the HUD, including the crosshair, you’ll first need to enable cheats. This means that this is only possible in practice mode and on private servers. To enable cheats, hit tilde [~] and use this command:
sv_cheats 1
Then disable the HUD with the crosshair by using:
cl_drawhud 0
You can enable the HUD and crosshair again with:
cl_drawhud 1
